Stack height is sometimes termed ‘sole to axle
distance’. It’s the measure of the overall height of the
pedal platform and cleat as measured from the pedal axle
centre to the under side of the shoe sole. The lower the
stack height the better, because your foot will closely
follow the circle transcribed by the pedal axle. This
means a lesser requirement to stabilise foot on pedal
than there would be with higher stack height systems. At
the moment there are no significant differences in the
stack heights of Look Keo, Time, Shimano SPD-SL, Keywin,
Speedplay and Crank Bros Quattro. Campagnolo are
different. While they are an effective design with very
good bearing quality, ease of entry, exit and in-pedal
security, there are an old system probably in need of an
update. This is most apparent in their stack height
which is six to eight millimetres higher than any of the
systems previously mentioned.
